Anne of Los Angeles, California asks:
My boss recently asked me about some gossip that has been going on in the office. I told her what I knew and she told others what I said. It then turned out that I began to look like the bad guy. I feel like should have never gotten involved. Should I have stayed out of it?

Davina:
Anne as a rule, I will always recommend that you steer clear of gossip in the office or any environment for that matter. However, it is very hard to step away when your boss specifically asks you for information. Responding to such situations can put you in the wrong light, especially if your boss does not know how to maintain confidentiality.

Believe it or not, as an executive, I am always in meetings with other executives who just simply have not grown up. I must say to you that if the information was important for the ethical operation of the business, then I will say that you made the right choice. But in the future, if the information is purely gossip, don't get involved. It's not worth it.
